I find the secondaries seem to kick-in if you terminate the main vine, but my guess is you are looking for a full plant and not just secondary growth;-)

Heat and nitrogen can increase vine growth but if you have pollinations in the near future you may want to go with the "patience" moto.

My small plants were growing slow and I realized there overwatered so I put a fan on the plant its growing now. Air blowing across the leaf pulls water from the leaf & creates a flow to the root pulling the water from the ground,Wind can be your friend.

Speaking of which, about what time to do guys start to see good secondary growth? I have a plant at only 4ft with, thus far, very limited secondary growth (maybe one or two leafs popping up). Does the main typically get to be a little longer before the secondaries really fire?

Yes 4 foot is a little early to tell

My plants have also had a case of weak secondary growth this year. Some secondaries crapped out and didn't grow at all. Never previously had this problem

Same here , heavy rains are not helping. When it does it rains 2 or three inches at once.

first 2 sets on both plants never grew here. Gave them some calcium nitrate weeks ago and all the rest have taken off.

I concur with TNorange. The monsoon season we have been having here has not helped the cause.
