When do the most growers put the stump cover on? I forgot exactly when I did this last year.

I just did mine a few days ago which is way earlier than I ever have before. I've gotten vine rot at the stump as early as the end of June before, so trying to be proactive this year.

Hey Handy..Man am I going to catch Hell for this one, lol. Took this out of your 2012 Diary date Tue July 3rd:
"I awoke(5:45) to thunder & some lite rain,Praise Jehovah Much needed rain The month of June might of been 1/2 inch at best. I ran to the Kin Cave & cut plastic covers to put over stumps cut 1/2 dozen leafs off the 1161 to make room. The wind is a little scary.I hope this puts a inch or two on the ground." lol!!! Old Timers, been there done that.

This year I made hoop houses with 3 hoops of PVC conduit. I just removed the cover and 1 hoop, then put a smaller cover over the stump area. Looks like it will work just fine.

New grower here....why cover the stumps? Don't I need to get some moisture to them, or is watering around the vines enough?

You need to get moisture to the root zone, but letting the stump continually get wet invites rot to set in. Most of us cover the stump and have a fan blowing on it to try to prevent that problem. I used to laugh about people using fans on their plants, but once you watch several of your plants die you change your tune pretty quickly!

I had foaming stumps for several years before I knew WTF was going on--tent the stumps, ventilate, don't cover the main vine with dirt, and moderate the amount of nitrogen applied before pollination time(anytime after 11 feet or so of main vine).

Half inch pvc pipe, connectors, small desk fans, and plastic work fine for me.
