What does it mean when the fruit about the size of a pea turns yellow and dries up before you get to pollinate it?

might be sunburn, you should shade the tip (and the baby pumpkin as soon as you see it -- until harvest)

My vote is nitrogen. Post a pic of your leaves next to your hand. That will tell a story.

The followi 1) Climate has more to do with this than most realize, including rain and temps. 2) Overapplication of chemical nitrogen 3) disease 4) genetics If you didn't apply a lot of nitro try using a bloom starter like 10-50-10 or close found at Lowe's or Home Depot at about 1/4 to 1/2 strength and apply foliar to all leaves and tips. Try throwing a few rotting banana peels under the tip you're looking to get a female as it gives off ethylene and may trigger more female dev. Or use the tomato set spray with indole butyric acid which may also trigger more females. I'm having problems getting a female to pop up yet. Also give it time and the weather will trigger more females.

The diary belongs to Matt and that picture is from the 2009 clone. Yes , he eventually got one but farther out.IF you look through his diary you will see the one he got. My personal experience is that farther out i have gotten good ones to pollinate after getting 2 or 3 that would just shrivel up.
