Hi All, my giant swedes are growing well but some of them are developing splits, what can I do to prevent this, could this make them go rotten? I have heard of boron being used, but I dont know anything about it, please can anyone offer me some advice.
regards
Woody

Hi Woody, splitting is ok but you do need to keep the splits clean, I spray the splits on my swedes with 1 part Hydrogen Peroxide 10 parts water. You also need to give them boron or they will rot from the center.

Thanks for the quick response, is it particular type/grade of boron I need and is it readily available?(i.e. where? a chemist, a garden centre)and how do i apply it.
Also could you answer the same questions concerning the hydrogen peroxide
many thanks

Hi Woody,
Just find a feed in the garden center which contains boron and follow the instructions for mixing and applying. Hydrogen Peroxide can be bought in the chemist, it is used to treat cuts, you will have to ask for it over the counter.
