2 foot long vine, headed 180 degrees in wrong direction, in spite of my orienting the plant correctly when planted.
Options? Bend vine around(very carefully, a bit at a time, at hottest part of the day)? Excavate and re-orient plant using snow shovel? Grow a pot plant instead?
And how often does this happen?

2' of vine gives you 4' or more of roots. No excavation now. Carefully train the vine around to the direction you need. You'll need alot more vine because you might need as much or more than a 4' radius. That's what I'd do. Never had to do it with an AG though. Good luck, I think you'll be fine.
I've almost had this happen. A little gentle persuasion as it grows before it flops helps. I always stick a brick and a piece of styrofoam beside it to make it lean the right way. Just in case.

I had the same thing happen this year! The vine had started in the right direction but then decided to arch all the way over and the tip of the main vine actually bent over the stump. I used dowels to push it in the right direction, a couple of inches at a time, most pressure on the top half of the vine. That put enough pressure on the stump to flex more in the right direction. I still had my hoops up with no cover so I could use clamps on the pvc to hold dowels from the top as well, which help a lot in the process. It took me five days to get it down, which was on Tuesday. I moved it 5-8 times a day when it was really hot. Make sure you watch the whole vine and check for stress lines. I had one from too much moving in the evening, but it was not bad. Also, I used about 20 long green dowels. Good luck, let us know the outcome

Happened to me a few years back as I wrongly guessed on the true leaf direction(planter impatience).Guess the vine was 1-2 ft when I started to train it with bamboo sticks.Everything was good by 10 days.First part of the vine stayed in the air so I lost a bit of rooting.

Forgot to mention, by the time it laid down it measured 4ft 6in. Just take your time and give it lots of supports

Get it on the ground and turn it where you want it to go-not a big deal

Thanks for advice, everyone. Inch by inch, in the warmest part of the day, turn, turn, turn.
