Last year I had one grown off a secondary that was 22 feet out and then at least 12 feet off the secondary. It was around 400 pds when it blew up and had over 900 square feet behind it. This year, I have one opening in the next couple days on my 840 and gonna pollinate with just 150 sq feet behind it. Not waiting for the heat this time.

That wasn't by choice to have it that far out. People have grown them much bigger on a secondary, and I even heard of one guy who grew an 8 or 900 pounder on a tertiary.

A grower a few years back did some research on that. 12-14 feet is the average for the bigger pumpkins. Of course there have been world records set at 9 feet out and others a lot farther out than that. The grower concluded, as I recall, that there wasn't much different between 12 feet and 15 feet out based on his research.
