I know there was a thread on this a while back, but here's my .02.

Between 3 growers here in town we are growing 5 (yes five) 1476 Hopkins plants...not by choice necessarily, but so be it.

Of those 5 plants 100% are multiple vine plants. I have personally not had a multiple since 2006.

It should also be noted that the second biggest pumpkin in the upper midwest was grown on the 1476 last year. Also a multiple vine plant!

Champ,

Describe your multiple vine.... for instance... my 980 was every other leaf was a double....same for my 1623. 1623 went back to OK, 980 got cut, and is now normal and very aggressive..... I know there are different levels of severity on the Mvine plants... interesting on your 1476's....

Thanks Chris good to know I'm not alone. lol. Would you have any second thoughts on using them as pollinators? also I guess I would like to know is it a genetics thing or weather and fert., related, or does anyone really know? thanks Terry

personally i would toss them in the compost pile.I like a plant that fills out to perfection:).Just my opinion!

Wiz they all a bit different but most are ribbonish with double nodes. I have no choice but to grow them since they are backups of the backups!!!

Chris...not sure if yours is like mine, but . I have a 1276 Marsh right now that on every secondary its throwing double leaves,, and double the roots on my secondaries , my secondaries aren't ribbon vines and are , well, i guess you can call them normal so far because they are not going flat and ribbon.
However, my main vine on this plant has single leaves, single flowers and secondaries. . Its really weird but I defiantly like it so as long as it doesn't start to go flat and ribbon vine.
I'll take a double leaf, double the roots anytime, no way would I throw this plant in a compost pile for a more 'normal' plant , and thats as long as the vines don't start ribbon vining.

I've seen double vines change to ribbon vines (3 or more together)& they are a real mess. Leaves & secondaries all over the place & they grow to length much slower. It takes a lot of extra work to keep them pruned. I would try to cut off the extra leaves & secondaries & hope it might straighten up.

For double vines, I would leave them growing. There is a good chance that they will either split into 2 seperate main vines (remove one & your back to normal) or they might just go back to a single on their own. I've tried overwatering (drenching them for a few days) the plants to help leach out any extra nitrogen or an excess of other nutrients & in some cases it worked or at least I thought that was it that made it turn back into a single. I've also just cut the extra leaves & secondaries off & let the main continue to grow. In some cases they have returned to normal for us.

If that's all you have left, go with it. Good luck.

by no means am i encouraging any grower to compost their plants if they become troublesome. As a competitive grower i just think we put too much money ,time and WORK into this hobby throughout the growing season to f%$k around with a mangled plant.Probably won't be long and the next WR will be grown off a flat vine plant.lol Nothing surprises me in this hobby anymore.:)
