Looks like my 1461 Pugh is double vining.

The Plant was normal out to 7 feet but every node from there out has 2 leaves, 2 flowers and 2 vines. What do people advise should be done?

Should I prune back to the 7 foot mark and make a secondary into a new vine or should I let it play out and see what happens?

Captain... don't prune just yet. Try excessive watering. Excessively water for the next few days to see if it returns to two vines.

Captain its time to prune,its unlikely a plant will go back to normal when it flat vined at that size.Trim off the tip-just the small growth at the very tip. In about 4 days you may need trim that area again. Go with a nice aggressive secondary vine( close to the trimmed tip) as the main. Looks like a great plant

Well I am watering like crazy but I am anticipating that I am going to cut it off. Is it a problem to use a secondary that is coming out of the double vined portion as the new main or should I use one that is back before the double vine started?

You can use any of the secondaries.The problem with that doubled part of the main is that its thinner and can split open which is stress on the grower.Thats why is better to trim now so it doesnt get bigger.Let the last three or four secondaries develop.Go with a strong one.those can also go double on you-but all of them wont.

Has anyone out there ever pollinated a pumpkin and grown it on the double portion? I have one female right where the double vine starts at about 7.5 feet and two more out by the tip that will probably be at around 11 and 12 feet when it grows out.

Captain 97;
I have grown a pumpkin on a flat vine; If you look at my 2011 diary, look at the 1059 I grew on it;
I also grew 2 other pumpkins on the same plant on secondaries before the double; double or no double the
plant still grows a nice pumpkin

Old Rookie,
Those were some nice looking Pumpkins. So If I am reading your diary correctly, you grew three Pumpkins on the same plant. The one on the flat vine was 375 pounds, and the ones on the secondaries were 450 and 190 pounds. Is that correct?

No;
the one on the flat fine was the biggest;
the ones on the secondary were the 375 and 190;
If I would of not grown the pumpkins on the secondarys;
I am pretty sure the one on the flat vine would of been
a bit bigger

I cut it off and am using a side vine for the new main.
