I made my patch bigger this year and have enough room for 3 plants. And in the third spot I have lost two plants in that spot. I dug around really good today and saw a few orange ants in there. What are these and are they killing my plants ? And how do I get rid of them ?

#1 water in with merit 75wp. If the invaders are actively eating the plant they will die. If that doesn't do the trick I would use a low dose of bifenthrin. A contact insecticide. That said think about whether the problem is really insect related. There could be lots of early season problems that are hard to pinpoint.

I have had yellow ants eat the roots right off plants a couple times in the past few years. I wouldn't take a chance.
