Ahhh...gardening...growing giant pumpkins...what a fine fine hobby. We place the perfect seedling in the warm earth. Rays of sunshine encourage it to grow. Warm summer showers and some feeding of nutrients cause the vine to reach out, and lovely blossoms appear. The pumpkin grows. It is huge and round...a beautiful sight! What a lovely hobby. Thank you Mother Nature.
A couple years ago, there was a mini-debate on BP. "Is what we do a hobby, or a sport?" Of course, no conclusion. Well I am going to tell you exactly what it is! It is an obstacle course! Engineered by Miss Mother Nature herself! Doc Gipe used to say, "There is always something over your shoulder, just waiting to get you." Don't expect smooth sailing. The best growers know how to recognize and deal with an obstacle before it gets them.
Our event has begun. The battle is on! This is what we signed up for. Enjoy it. And.....Happy Mothers Day, Mother Nature!

Gardeners have to be humble, because we are constantly being humbled. Trouble is alway around the next bend. But .....we learn, adapt and continue on in faith that a harvest will come!

Nana, I agree, it is a challenging sport/hobby(whatever you want to call it). I'm curious to see how that 979 McMillan does for you. That could throw a beauty.

I've always called it "competitive gardening" which, of course, sounds like an oxymoron.
