Rip. Get some candles and space them about 2 feet from the plant. Button up the hoop houses and put a blanket over the entire hoopouse. Our plants will do much better. In the morning open up the hoops and blow out all the candles. Also make sure you have a thermometer inside the hoops and outside. You'll be surprised at how much heat is maintained inside the green houses.

When it gets in the 30's /low 40's (since we have no electricity either) we put 2-3 hand warmers around the plant-then cover with styrofoam cooler-then put a thermometer-then put a rubbermade container over that.We tuck around the bottom of the rubbermade with a flannel sheet and put a metal lantern with a candle in on one side and another candle of some type on the other side.We have a hothouse over that, then tarp, then quilts.-made it through 2 days/nites of May snow without damage.

Glad to hear you made out okay Rip. This time of year is so stressful for many growers. Balance between to much heat and not enough. I like the candle ideas. It gives carbon dioxide and warms the plants up. I also have a small heater in all the hoophouses. And drape blankets over the hoops. It really helps to keep some heat in. TONIGHT we may get frost but I'm confident that my set up will work.If I had an old electric blanket I'd use that also. Anything to add heat and maintain heat.
