Apparently, you are one of those guys who read almost all diaries. Gr8! There´s a little competition going between a bunch of growers who want to see who´s growing the biggest (and alternatively the prettiest) pumpkin on a 150 sqft plant.

It seems a lot of interest in the Morning Chat 150 Square Foot Pumpkin contest has developed recently so here is the explanation. Many years lots of small groups of growers or individuals initiate contest or challenges among themselves for bragging rights or other stakes and this one is much the same. Early one morning in the morning chat room the topic of discussion turned to growing area size when I mentioned I would try to grow a pretty pumpkin in a very limited size patch. As it frequently happens with friends and growers somebody says I can do that…better! This lead to a challenge among us to see who could grow the prettiest and alternately the heaviest pumpkin in 150 square feet or less. It was decided this would be a contest for the current group and I proceeded to formulate the rules. The proposed rules were submitted to the group for review and revisions. It only took a couple rounds of emails to settle on the final revision of the rules we would all follow and the contest was finalized on or about 20 March. Basically it’s very simple, the entire plant and the pumpkin must remain inside the declared 150 square feet or 14 square meters. There will be some required photos as per the eight rules. The required photos will be posted in the Flat Norm diary but players are encouraged to post as many additional photos as they like in their own diary.

Since the contest was finalized (more than a month ago) several growers have ask expressed interest in joining the fun. Each time it explained that it was already finalized and I regret that no more contestants were permitted for this year. Some understand and others don’t take it as well. I’ve explained if everything goes well this year and there is continued interest next year it could be done for a larger group. It sounds simple at first look but once you begin to plan it becomes obvious this will not be an easy task. There are some growers that have done it in past years with nice results. For those not in this year’s contest I have 2 suggestions. You could solicit players and manage your own version of the Morning Chat 150 Square foot contest or you can follow the Flat Norm diary this year and watch as we stumble through the season. (The first required photo isn’t due until everyone has their contest plant set out).
All the rules were negotiated by the group except Rule number 1 which reads in part; 1) Everyone is honest by definition and this must be fun! Patch visits by Flat Norm are meant to be fun not supervisory in any way. Flat Norm is a silent observer.

Since Bart will not let us in...
Anyone else willing to create another group? I am in. I would be willing to collect names, but I think the thought of pride as the prize is best so it is fun. Looks like enough interest.
Email me at [email protected] if you want to organize, help organize, or be a part of another group as Bart suggests. Use 150 Contest in the title line.
Maybe the Darkside 150 Club will over throw the Morning Chat 150 Club?
Bart would surely be nice enough to share his rules with us outcasts.

Can I count you in Luke? Looks like we are approaching 10 people in this fun undertaking. If anyone else would like to join the fun, email me. Braggers rights and a great pumpkin are the hopes of this quest. Thanks to the Morning Chat group for sharing information and thinking of this. We will copy your efforts and have some fun too. Especially Bart for starting the challenge.

Count me in! I have a virgin patch still to be prepped for my 4th kin and 150 sq ft sounds better than 450.

Scott, I have zero room to allocate. I will be growing one from a pot for pollination purposes and could try from that. I still like the 151 Group or the 149'ers.

Darren, Big Orange and Greenhouse, and So. Cal, email me. I know who you all are, but need an email please to,start distribution list of accurate addresses. Anyone else, get names in soon since plants are going in. Bryan Mailey and I will be working together to get it organized quickly. The rules have been received from the Morning Chat 150 group and they are solid. Talk to you soon.

Update: We have acquired some rules from moning chat. I want to clarify a few things based on this. No pots, one plant and can be green. Additionally, there will be as many groups as people want to make. I have created one from this thread and plan on closing the entry to it soon just like the morning chat group did. To keep it fun and entertaining for all, it is best to be small so it is not a chore for a few people to manage.
Additionally, because it is for fun, we are not going to have an inter group challenge at this time. We agree with the morning chat group in that this year is meant to see how it goes as a pilot year for this 150 challenge. More information to follow. Email me soon if you are interested, but only if you want to have fun and not get wrapped around the axle.
