10,000 British Pounds = $15,314, Nice Prize! Now all I'll have to do is find a way to get my record breaker to the Autumn Pumpkin Festival in Southampton this fall, LOL

Growing a world breaking pumpkin and then handing it(and the seeds inside) over to them doesn't sound very appealing.Thats what I gathered from the rules.

For 15K, they can have my world record and the seeds.

The first 1000 pound pumpkin was worth $50K. We've regressed.

Yep, any new world record pumpkin would easily draw much more than that in seed sales. Unless, there are just a few viable seeds in it. It would be interesting to have some sort of pumpkin ultrasound to know the approximate number of seeds before consigning it to an outfit like that!

I wish them the best of luck. But I'll be growing the next WR. I got a lot of professional help, some even for pumpkin growing:) I invite everyone to watch my diary to see just how I do it.

When the big prize was given for the 1000 pound pumpkin you had Ray Waterman to raise the money. There has yet to be a replacement for him and I don't think there will be any time soon. RAY was one of the last great pumpkin entrepreneurs. For sure Ray is still out there. Maybe the GPC could get him to start the effort for a $250K prize for the first 2500 pound pumpkin.

I remember the 50K prize for the first 1,000 pounder, and always wondered why a similar big money prize was not offered for other milestones in world record weight. What type of donors did Ray solicit to put up the 50K for the first 1,000 pounder?

Ray also got a $10,000 prize arranged for the first pumpkin to weigh over 500 pounds. If I remember correctly, Ray got Lloyd's of London to insure against the possibility of someone growing a pumpkin over 500 lbs. Norman Gallagher collected that at Half Moon Bay, in 1984. I wonder how many of 2013's weak dollars it would take, to have the same buying power that ten grand would have had 29 years ago? It was a very nice prize, for sure! If it was Lloyd's of London who paid the $50,000 prize to Nathan and Paula Zehr, then I'm guessing that it would be a hard sell, these days to get Lloyd's to insure anything in regards to Atlantic Giants! Those were two amazing prizes in their day!
