I was going thru my seed cabinet and found a 805 Pukos that I won in a raffle. I never planted it because I had soil issues back then and forgot about it. The question is does anyone think it will germinate and is it worth crossing with the new generations of heavy hitter seeds?

look here for some 805 Pukos progeny:
http://www.giant-pumpkin-genetics.org/
and then look at some of the heaviest progeny on AGGC:
http://www.aggc.org/aggc_main.asp
You will notice that many of them went pretty heavy to the old chart (which should have been a pretty useful one so many years ago, I suppose), and many of these pumpkins had a very nice shape. Also, it is apparent that the 805 Pukos is not the right choice for growing a beauty contest winner.
Therefore, a cross with some size genetics (maybe 2009 Wallace or 1789 Wallace or 1775 Starr as pollinator) could be a fine thing (IMHO). If you are lucky you will combine the aggressive size growth of the pollinator with some % heavy and some shape stabilizing effects of the 805.

The 805 Pukos is a seed that produced quite well back in it's day. However I'm now aware of many of it's offspring that did exceptionally well. Considering it was grown a lot, I would think its offspring would have had the opportunity to shine if they were going to. Steve Davies grew a nice one from a 2nd generation 805 Pukos...but that is all I am aware of. I grew the 805 a couple times & it did well for me in terms of 6 or 7 years ago. I think we have better genetics now. There aren't too many of yesteryears seeds I'd grow today, even a great oldie like the 805 Pukos.
