I've never givin consideration in the past to the way the sun moves across my gardens but I wonder. "Do any of you growers out there run your Plants from North to South so you have an Optimal Photo intake on the leaves as the sun runs through the course of the day or am I being too analytical?" I do know that Plants follow the suns point of Atmospheric Influent Refraction so this would tell me they are telling us all something about this very subject. Just as leaves cup to collect moisture they also move towards the sun as much as possible I've noticed. I might have answered my own question here but would like to here what you all do or not do about Plant Placement per More Gains whether its AG's or Melons your growing. Thanks

I don't think it matters much other than which endo of the pumpkin gets the most fall sun. Last year I had 3 S-N, 2 N-S and 3 E-w

I think North > South would normally be ideal. In my patch I've had every plant directional orientation possible, and it hasn't seemed to make much of an impact.

After a few fields of spagetti I've started planting with the prevailing wind. My plants are in the open.

I haven't grown these things long enough to have seen any difference versus plant direction but appreciate input and knowledge from others. Thanks All

Dave, Does that mean you plant so the tip of the x-mas tree pattern is into the wind or the base (Stump)? Thanks

Stump. The tip is growing the same direction as the wind is blowing.

our biggest and best last year were all growing south to north. another reason why i like south to north? the pumpkins stem during the season gets more sun ( if pumpkins stem was facing north? the stem would be in the shade a lot )heat, (along with a dry fungicide)helps keep that stem dry and disease free. pap

I usually try to grow from north to south, because it seems the leaves are better oriented to the sun when it's at it's peak. After reading pap's reply, I'll be rethinking it. I haven't had stump problems here, but he makes a good point.

my Cape Breton record breaker in 2010(1280lbs) was grown west to east and my 1811 was also grown west to east :)

If you want to go by numbers, listen to Pap since their best dwarfs all others.
I personally like West to East like Donk mentioned since I only get 5 hours of light a day and all in the east sky. After 1pm, I'm growing in shade.

I like to have my side vine facing into the wind, and the other side is away from wind. Most of our wind is out of the west. We grow out of the north or south. The vines do not roll when I do this.

Scott your lucky you don't have wind Issues. Thanks Dave!! Pap, Sounds very logical, Thanks. Donkin I understand why you go W to E. Luke, Bigger Chainsaw, lol Hope your season is much better this season. Alot of good info here and alot of it relative to your growing conditions.I've got one patch that think I'll go West to East and the rest I must say I'll try South to North..Makes sence to keep those stumps well conditioned. Thanks ALL
