16-8 with flourescent bulbs less than an inch from leaves. I have done 24 on with sprouts and small plants. They grow faster that way but I like them to be closer to the same as nature for when they go out to the sun. Not sure if it really matters but my reasoning is for conistancy without taking a faster growing plant and slowing it down once it goes outside. And any more than
8 off they seem to get more leggy indoors with flourescents in my experience. I6-8 works nice for me.

Use some flourescent lights James. It won't heat the plant up too much and you can keep them really close like Shazzy mentioned which makes the seedling get stocky and not long and skinny. I use 7 dollar bulbs from Lowes.

Yard, I don't fret too much on this cause it's only inside 10-15 days depending on weather. I keep them on with my sleep schedule so generally 17-7.

The past couple of years I haven't bothered to set up a timer. I leave the lights on 24/7.

Does anyone put a fan on their plants to toughen then up? I've never started indoors, but i'm going to this year. I'm going to try a Metal Halide and see what happens.

I use the blue light bulbs from Lowes until it get warm enough in the garage to use the flourescent lights. I leave them on 24 hours until I start to put them outside.
