Some growers from the UK are now ready to take a shot at the world record (they bought a 2009 seed).

Good find on the article Ken! It will be interesting to see how successful the buyer of the seed, the Thompson & Morgan Seed Company, is growing it. My guess about their motivation is the Thompson & Morgan will start selling 2009 Wallace X self seeds in its 2014 seed catalog.

The article should update shortly as they asked for my comments. I do wonder about the comment for Guinness though.

They updated the article with some of my comments and a clarification that Guiness is still verifying Ron's 2009 as a world record.

I was told the 2009 I bought would produce the next world record, what gives?

It very well might. I would wait until that actually happens before making a press release.

A lesson well known to every giant pumpkin grower and which someone in the UK may be about to learn is, "A seed alone does not a pumpkin make."

The seed was won by Ian Paton at the EGVGA auction. If the Patons are the professional growers of that seed, there is a gooooood chance for a real big one.

Glad to know they will be growing the next WR. We can all just take next year off and go to Disney Land.:)

I shoulda decided early on not to grow this year, as the next world record is already in the bag(much luck to the Paton brothers), but I already started last fall, so I'm committed now. Should I cut and run?
Great thread Ken. I just can't figure out why they're still verifying the WR.

It takes Guinness 6 to 8 weeks once they receive the paper work. Unless you pay for what they call a fast track claim. Just takes a bit of time but it will happen.

Maybe they should go ahead and start the paperwork for this next one. They will even have the address of the patch and the weigh-off info already entered...

unfortunately if it was as easy as just having the right seed the wr would be broken many times each year. the seed is just part of the equation. pap

Hi all would like to say Thompson and Morgan rock. They sponsor our XPG pumpkin show and are just so generous. They are totally committed to promoting our show. Buying a great seed for a load of money seems to have done the trick with our press. The Mail called me yesterday wanting some growing tips. I don't know who's growing it though its not us. Stewie

If I'm not mistaken Bernard Lavery was the only Brit to ever break the standing pumpkin WR. He grew a 710 pounder that held the world record for a short amount of time before an American broke the record again for that given year.
