Hi everyone. Im fairly new to the sport as most of you know. I received my micorhiza In the mail yesterday and it said to broadcast 5 lbs per 750 sf of patch. Is this what I'm supposed to do? Or should I just use it for plant starting and vine burying? Also, if I'm willing to wast a little bit of money ( I bought twice what I need) should I broadcast more than this since you can't over do it? Thanks

I am no expert but unless you are rich I don't think I would broadcast it. That stuff is very expensive. My understanding is that Mico only works when it comes in direct contact with the roots so I try to use it very locally in rooting areas. Personally I mix it into the area immediately around the plant in about a 3 foot circle right before the plant goes in the ground. From then on I Use a scoop at every leaf node when burying vines.

i think instead of using it at leaf nodes i am going to make a tea with the micorhiza i herd it works better and is a sure fire way for the roots to come in contact with the powder

Doesn't mycorhizae colonize roots? I would use it to dust to your rootball when you transplant and wherever you bury the leaf nodes.

I used it at all my leaf nodes last year on my squash plant along with some "other" ingredients.

I think it works well :)

I work 5 lbs in 750 sq.ft. and under each leaf node, it will make contact with the root system and is not a waste. Of course this is MY opinion.

I use water soluble & run it through drip tape & put in Compost tea. I Try to keep it in contact with the new roots as the plant progress through the season.I did very little leaf node burying.

Interesting stuff! Do you think the water soluble mico works as well as the regular micorhiza Mark?

I think it works better as IMHHO it would start working instantly & travel farther quicker & more uniformly with water as the delivery agent.

Ron Wallace added 15 pounds of Mykos and 21 pounds of winter rye to his 3400 square foot patch last year before planting his seedlings. He added more Mykos at leaf nodes as the vines grew. Apparently the Mykos worked to proliferate hyphyae(fine, long roots) on the winter rye which, when tilled in, provided an expanded area of mycorrhizae for pumpkin vines to contact.

Someone correct me if I misunderstood what Ron did.

Then then " goosed it " with 3 pounds of 48-0-0, 2 gallons of humic acid and 6 oz. of liquid azos!!!

Very interesting stuff Steve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to have to read it again,,,,,,,,,,,,,, for the 16th time!

He added mykos before winter rye then planted winter rye, then as the plant grew he filled it in? Or was this during fall prep? This is confusing,,, don't you put in micorhiza right before plant? Or am I wrong? I'm planting winter rye next week when it it above 33 degrees. Do I put pumpkin pro in before the cover crop?????

Keep it simple this round and worry about adding Myco to the pumpkin plant at each node when you bury and at the seedling once transplanted outside. This will all occur mid to late April and on.

Cueball, join SNGPG for $25 and get the latest newsletter(and more)which has the "Wallace 2012 Season Review in it. Or buy a copy of Dick's Tips 2.

pg3(ashton): Ron Wallace planted his winter rye in the SPRING, and didn't till it in until his plants had outgrown the greenhouses.
