What does your neighbours think about growing? Do they hate it? Love it? Any funny stories? Not so funny stories?

Here is one story about having a veggie garden on front yard, some people just don´t understand...

I came home one day & found a mentally Challenged person in my garden. He was bent over with a grocery bag & a pocket knife. He had 3 or 4 softball size kins in the bag and was cutting another one off the vine. There is a American Legion Hall directly across the street that has a day treatment activity center to help people out.I asked the man What are you doing in my garden? He replied.I'm picking these squash.I was shocked & surprisingly calm.I said those aren't squash Those are my prize kins.lol!Everyone was amazed that I wasn't livid. So I was forced to put up a No trespassing sign. This way people cant say.DAH! It's not posted!LOL

A table which lists a couple of aggressive pesticides used to maintain the decorative plants in such a front yard (...no need to tell if one had already used them or is planning to use them soon) should solve both problems, as long as people can read. Less theft and, most importantly, not a vegetable garden status any longer.

As for the NY Times link, it's a shame, but it all starts with someone who runs to government to stop their neighbor from doing something they don't like. It's too bad... throughout life we will encounter those who want to control another. I hope that the homeowner is successful in changing the law to allow any well maintained front yard, including a beautiful garden.

I think these front yard gardens will become more popular, as people realize that it's worth thousands of dollars a year worth of food.

The YouTube link is of John Kohler, "Growin' your Greens". I am a subscriber! John has a lot of enthusiasm, and his videos are great on these winter nights. Another set of videos to subscribe to are "Mr. Grizzerbear". Just search for it on YouTube. (Anything to get through January and February...)

We have had great neighbors! Up in Washington our neighbors used to love to watch when we put Matt's under our pumpkins. This is a VERY delicate operation as we always wait for the kin to be about basketball size. Then Pete gets over the pumpkin ,lifts up and I get between his legs and slide the Matt under just so....oh, they got some good laughs watching that operation!
Here in NAPA our neighbor is a retired welder. He saw us borrow a tripod and then built us THE best one. Aluminum legs but reinforced to lift anything. He also made our tri pod top extra special.

@tumbleweeds, "...our neighbors used to love to watch when we put Matt's under our pumpkins." Oh yes, I probably would love to see that, too, so far I have only seen one Matt not under but in a pumpkin:

I grow at a community garden, you guessed it, I'm the Pumpkin Guy! they love the giant pumpkins, I have had people take pictures next to it. They wonder how everything grows so good in my garden. And yes, do you feed them milk!

Pumpking, my darn Ipad is always changing my words! It does make for an interesting story, doesn't it? Yes, I MUST read my posts before I hit the send button! I will check out your Matt IN the pumpkin as opposed to our mats UNDER our pumpkins! LOL

My patch sits 150ft off the road but always have people stop to take pictures of ask questions. I don't try and hide my kins or melons. Some growers plant corn around their patch for wind protection and to keep people from seeing what they have. I just like to talk growing with whoever will listen. lol

behind our house is a apartment complex and to the left are some duplexes sooo I dread seeing new tenants as they see me outside with a tractor then all the work through oput the season and then they either start asking questions or just give me some bewildered looks as these big objects are covered up. Then eventually I am loading a pumpkin and it pretty cool to see there faces and I get the look of "oh thats what he's growing"

In 2010, I grew some 100 pounders from Lowes AG seeeds and they got smashed in my front yard in no time. Since then, I have kept anything worth showing on the back patio on display like a paranoid old man. I figure by the time my boys are in Jr high I will really be screwed since I was a big time $$it disturber back then. That karma cloud just keeps hanging over my house.
