hi pap i was wondering what are your thoughts on mulching around pumpkins with hay or straw

i dont like my pumpkins to sit on any type of material that decomposes. i prefer to start with a thin piece of4ft x 4ft plywood covered with a larger piece of mill fabric.filling in around any soil exposed pumpkin sides should the fruit grow past the belting area.
straw would be a good weed barrier in other areas however we prefer to hand spray the weeds a couple times during the season with a weed killer.
