The GPC continues to grow under the leadership of Dave. As the GPC grows, the amount of work needing to be done by someone also grows. If the GPC is to continue to grow, and I believe it will, somewhere along the line it will become necessary to hire a person to do all the day to day mundane things that have to be done and eat up a ton of time for someone like Dave, or for that matter, some of the other more involved board members. So, I am suggesting the GPC should consider hiring a person, maybe a secretary, and maybe the time to do that is now. This person could do the mailings, make up the lists, pick up the mail, respond to the mail, do the newsletter, make the phone calls, order the plaques, make the arrangements for the annual meeting, take care of the seeds, order supplies, schedule things like board meetings and do the many other things that presently the President and some of the more active people on the board have to be doing, for nothing, on their free time and, with people complaining about how they do it. At some point the work will be more than the volunteer board members and officers can do or would be willing to do, and then what? Who would want to be the President or an active board member and do all this work if the size of the GPC doubles and it could, and who might be interested in spending all of their free time doing GPC stuff. What then? It is probably time to hire someone, at least part time, or to perform specific tasks under the direction of the board and officers. Think about it.

Speaking of the GPC and the great work they do, Ron and Dick Wallace generously dontated a 2009 Wallace seed to me to auction off in order for our fledgling (2nd year) weighoff in Vancouver, British Columbia to raise funds to gladly pay for the GPC Fees for the 2013 season and weighoff.
An equally generous donor sponsored our GPC entry fee for 2012 and the innagural Aldor Acres Giant Pumpkin Weighoff in BC was a huge success.
See you in the Seed Auction Board...

Just keep in mind that all the good Dave did for GPC and the rest was not just a job. It was there life. I don't think you can always find some one that will put that much into something for to long, for a (that a boy.)
I agree with Marv start lookiing in to it now before you get to the end of the road.
Thanks Dave for all you have done.

The fees don't have to go up.The number of people growing is going to double in the next few years. This will be additional income for the GPC.Maybe Marv is right, even Churches have employes.A restructure of the GPC may bring more bells & whistles for awl!

Here is the thing guys. If you take anyone with a lot of skills and energy and ability and burn up the time they have with menial tasks, they have less time to spend on new things, new ideas and big things. This is like do you want the generals spending their time peeling potatoes or working on the battle plan?

hiring a partime secretay, say a couple hundred a month, to handle mailings, scheduling, web site, etc would be a good idea. it doesn't pay for all the time they spend, but it helps. you do have to consider if adding 1 employee, will make more hours of IRS paperwork and other costs than than they are contributing to the operation.

Maybe increasing the number of volunteers working within the GPC to match the growth of the member weigh offs is an option? How much in terms of a percentage has the GPC grown in the last 2 years?

I like Farmer Bens idea, maybe have a auction every year to pay the employee.
