Amelio would be correct Pap. He was only two years old at the time. Amelio is just so humble he doesn't like to talk about it. lol

What year was that in? I recall that I got seeds from both Paul Zehr and Bill Greer and crossed them . I sent many of those seeds from that cross to Ray Waterman which, being the entrepeneur he is he dubbed "The One-Ton Cross." There were some decent pumpkins grown from that seed at that time but in the long haul not much came of it.

AAAH the debate continues. The Zehrs or Bill Greer?
I have always thought it was Bill Greer.
Bill was from Canada and the Zehrs from the US.
Marv, I also grew the one ton cross with no luck.
Does anyone have the dates?

Paula Zehr walked away with the prize money for the first one thousand pounder. I may be wrong but I think Ray Waterman paid her $10,000. Does anyone recall? Where is Ray? He knows for sure. He paid out the bucks. Bill Greer may or may not have been first but Paula got the money.

According to the AGGC Bill Greer grew a 1006 in 1996 also. The AGGC also has Steve Hoult growing the 1010 in 1995.

Here's the thing... Steve Hoult grew an unofficial 1010 in 1995 and deserves credit for doing so. In 1996, Bill Greer had his 1006 weighed first and should be credited for the first official 1000 lb. pumpkin. The Zehr's broke the record later the same day and collected the big money because their pumpkin was weighed at the site promoting the big money. Prizes notwithstanding, 1010 Hoult 95 UOW, 1006 Greer 96 and 1061 Zehr 96.

Sometimes the older growers need to set the story straight for the newer growers.

Andy:
I checked with the best Canadian historian Iknow and got the following:
1006 Greer 1996 1061 Zehr 1996
Unless I am mistaken the UOW would not be accepted as a record.
Part of the confusion is that in 1996 the Orange Jacket was strictly a Canadian award and not available to others.
