Few years back seen sum feild pumpkins growing off the bank into the creek.they were just floating around.so thats got me thinking.wonder if you could set up a raised bed& have pumpkin hanging off in pool.seems it would keep weight stress off pumpkin from having to grow upwards.be allot to do of course would have to strap around so it wouldnt float of& pull away from vine.& not sure if pumpkin would rot in water.them ones in the creek were probli 20 lb feild pumpkins & theyhad to have been growing hole time in water.

Put it inside a inflatable kiddie pool to float in a bigger pool to keep it dry.

There you go good thinking.would have to have a tarp over that also to keep from filling up with rain water.

I think they have kiddie pools with a cover over top. Supposed to keep the sun off the kids, or maybe a pumpkin. lol

You are all crazy....the weight of the pumpkin would sink the kiddie pool. There is a reason why these things don't grow in the water. A Pumpkins fruit still needs to breath or it will rot.

Pumpkins float.so its not like dead weight.yes the pumpkin would push down but if the kiddy pool.was big enough.so the slack would push down & still keep the floats stay above water.weather right or wrong its all in fun

yardman the skin of the fruit needs to breath, it will most likely rot, but what the hell give it a try!! Pumpkins got big by growers thinking outside the box.

I know...fill the pool with hydrogen peroxide...that way there will be the extra oxygen that the pkn skin needs.

Wish i could click link but cant forsum reason.but plastic will rot stuff guik.but as far as water.not sure found pumpkins in the creek.there was several foot of vine in,the water with pumpkin growing on it& they had to have started in the water& was nice size when i seen them.the vine didnt grow& push them out there after growing a bit.just like a log or stick under water stays hard but on land it will rot from getting wet & drying.& that would be allot of poroxide i wud probli try a fish tank bubbler be cheaper.& i understand bout the breathing but a 1000+ pumpkin pressing against the ground sand or styrofoam.isnt geting a hole lot of air i wud say.yep deffinately gona grow a feild pumpkin into a pool just to test if skin can handle it

Yard, put a life jacket or a lil floaty on it and you'll be set. Plus when that southern heat kicks in, you can have a pool party with some beers and grow pumpkins at the same time.

Yep could be done.to do it rite you would need a big erea that would hold water long enough for roots to soak up& have on time watering so not to root soak.most hydro uses perlite so u can fill& drain& perlite holds just enough water in its air pockets.that would be a big setup.cause most hydro just on root ball.but with a vine wud probli want big enough erea for vine roots also

5 or 6 kiddie pools would give you enough square footage for one plant, and then maybe a seventh for the pumpkin to float in.....?

note for darren- I tried that with a watermelon, it explodes the box( half inch lexan), and the pumpkins have alot more power behind them it worked for a field pumpkin but the watermelon blew. Just something fun I tried, if you can guess close to the final size it will end up it will be flat but only on the parts that grew into the box. Would be cool to stop that hanging off the pallet problem I am seeing everyone else have!
