I have a rear tine MTD tiller (model 21a-430-0620) I had to replace a broken chain for the tines, now it wont shift into forward drive with forward till.
I think it has some thing to do with the part #59 (shifting fork)

If it was working b4 & chain just broke.shud be good cud be gears not lined up right n the casing to match wat the shifter rod is set on.see if u can get it in neutral & spin blades by hand to let u know its n neutral & put rod in right place.happened to me once with a gear box on mower that had manual shifter.figured id throw it out there

I was surprised that I actually got it put back together, but it will be easier the next time around.I just cant picture in my head how to get every thing in the right place all at the same time.
when I get brave enough to tear it back apart,I will see if your method works, did you see the #of parts in that gear box !

Baitman, I have seen this before (a different brand though,) I bet when you put it back together, part #1 didnt go in the groove of part #59, Ive done the exact same thing before and had to take it apart again. If you still can't figure it out, try to go to Justanswer.com and ask an expert, Cool site because you only have to pay if they truly help you fix it and are 100% satisfied, just an FYI, Hope that helps.

I dont think it would be a mating problem between parts #1 and #59, it will shift through all gears just not forward/forward.
forward/forward is the last position on the "left" I guess somethings not moving all the way over
I will check the site you mentioned mbrandy.

Is part 59 over part 7? I have a feeling #59 isn't over part #7 like it should be. I would also almost think you should be able to feel it when you shift it back and forth. Does it feel like it used to when you shift? does it stay in place or is there some slop now? I'm also thinking that id the tiller is running you can get it to engage moving the shifter back and forth with some pressure.

Part #7 has 2 gears with a spacer between them, part 59 goes between the gears, since I can shift left and right, the "fork" must be in between them, I think..
Jimbo01 you cant shift while the gear box is engaged , it locks up everything and the manual says never shift while power is engaged.
the weather is good here, maybe I should start tearing it back apart, but once you pull the 2 halves apart, your pretty much screwed on knowing how the parts are meshed together

I have submitted my question to the site you recommended, I am waiting for an answer
