That would be neat I think everyone should throw in an old seed just to see what it would do, you know mix up the gene pool a little.

I've got thousands of seeds from 1980 through 1987. Who knows whether these antiques will germinate. It would be fun to see what they'd do if they did germinate! I have several hundred from my 1983 Colorado State record--the 349 Todd. The mother plant was from the 493 1/2 Dill World record ( 1981) that Howard so kindly sent me in 1982. Somewhere in that vast stash, I know I've got some of the seeds that Howard Dill and Norman Gallagher sent me a long, long time ago. I'd love to find the seeds from my first state record---that 115 lb. one I grew in 1972. Just for grins, I'll have some of my vintage seeds in our Northern Colorado Weigh Off auction on January 13th!

Crash, along these lines of thought: I've thought it would really be fun to have a " Vintage competition". Just like vintage racing of motorcycles, etc. Get out the Ga3. Let's see if we could wake up a seed that's been snoozing for over 30 years!

Yes, Everything i ever grew that Howard sent me was beautiful orange. My 1984 Colorado State record was out of what Howard called his "big long one". I've always referred to it as the B.L.O. Anyway, I've carried a picture of B.L.O.'s fruit in my wallet, with my beautiful Mother sitting in it--- for 28 years. No, she didn't sit in it for 28 years. Hopefully the picture of her in that beautiful 424 lb. pumpkin has inspired many folks to grow giant pumpkins!

If they did germinate it would be interesting to see how big they would get with current growing techniques. It might give us an idea on how much of our increases have been do to genetics and how much have been do to technique.

That would be really interesting to see how big we could grow it today.

Captain, I've thought for years now, that one answer that could be had is that if we could get one of my 1983 seeds to germinate, it would truly be fun to see if--with the methods we now have-- just how much bigger a pumpkin could have been grown in 1984, if we had known in 1984, what we now know! I was at Half Moon Bay in 1984 when Norman Gallagher brought his spectacular new world record down from Chelan, Washington. At that time, I thought that 612 lb. world record would stand for decades! I shows just how wrong we can be about the potential of the genetics we are playing with, doesn't it?

Crash, I'll bet there's a few others out there who'd love to do a vintage competition. If the interest is there, I will make sure and have enough lots on our auction to provide that opportunity, and obviously, beyond the auction, I'll be happy to answer bubble requests as well. If i can get one of these old timers to germinate, I'm going to name it's pumpkin-- " Rip Van Winkle":)
