What is an eligible rookie, Does that mean any first year grower. Or is 2nd 3rd eligible? Do they have to be in any certain clubs?

Should be for first year growers (imho).
We just had our first GPC event here, and although I feel like a rookie still sometimes, my 1037 Dixon or Chad's 1044 Gilmore from this year simply should not be considered in a rookie category.

If it's for growers who never had an entry in a GPC event before, then I nominate Paul and Cheryl Fulk with 1,643 and 1,524 pounders.

I agree Darren...Chris had an outstanding year and was a rookie grower with Atlantic Giants...
Not sure about Paul and Cheryl...but unless it was their first year growing AGs, then I dont see how they can be considered rookies just because it was a first year event like ours.

I don't think this thread was opened to debate the current wording of rules. I think it was opened to find all people who are eligible according to the current rules. Thanks.

You guys are to cool Darren and Glenn!
What a fun year I had!!!!
Just weighed mine at a local farm, no GPC.
If I get a good one next year I'll drive up to Elk Grove,,,,,,,,,,, I'll come in 40th place but it would be a GPC event and would sure be fun!!!!

This is a GPC award it is for GPC recognition & the only way we can verify is by GPC results that are here on BP.
The hardest part is knowing where to look so we post here to get your help & thank you for supporting the GPC.

A check box next year on the weighoff entry for first year and number of years entering a gpc event would be cool to watch as the results rolled in. Just an idea I would enjoy

Maybe the GPC can clarify something. Is the award intended for first year growers? Or is the award intended for first entries at a GPC event?
And don't say both :)

Here's the text right out of the GPC definition of a 'rookie'.
5) Rookie of the year award- This award will go to the grower of the heaviest official fruit from all first year growers who have never entered any pumpkin into competition previously.
Nothing is mentioned about it needing to be a previous 'GPC' competition.

UNFORTUNATELY AN AWARD LIKE "ROOKIE OF THE YERR" WILL ALWAYS BE OPEN FOR CRIES OF FOUL AND UNTRUTHS. WHY? BECAUSE YOUARE DAMBED IF YOU DO AND DAMBED IF YOU DONT.
IF YOU CONSIDER A ROOKIE GROWERS "THAT PERSON WHO WEIGHED THE HEAVIEST PUMPKIN AT THEIR FIRST EVER GPC PUMPKIN COMPETITION EVENT"YOU HAVE A FIVE YEAR GPC RECORD HISTORY TO PROOF AGAINST.
IF YOU CONSIDER A ROOKIE GROWER TO BE "THAT PERSON WHO IS WEIGHING THEIR FIRST GIANT PUMPKIN EVER --- BE IT GPC-WPC-OR P ON ME? THEN YOU REALLY HAVE A CAN OF WORMS TO PICK THROUGH. ESPECIALLY WHEN ANY AWARDS OR MONEY ARE AT STAKE. SOMETIMES THESE THINGS BRING OUT THE WORST IN US.
MY RECCOMMENDATION---CHANGE THE WORDING TREE DOCTOR MENTION ABOVE TO READ "NEVER ENTERED ANY PUMPKIN PREVIOUSLY IN GPC COMPETITION".

If you can say that any of the growers have previously weighed a fruit in competition prior to 2012. Please make sure you can say this with out any question & have proof to substatiate your claims.
My earlier point is that having the GPC results to refer to here on BP makes it much easier to track plus the winner has to enter it in a GPC sanctioned site. As of right now just going by what has been posted with out any research by myself (disclaimer) the standings for rookie of the year are:
Paul & Cheryl Fulk 1643 & 1524 Christy Nelson 1379.5 Chad Gehweiler 1,142.50
I have to say there are probably more candidates out there so who else had a good rookie year?

I'll bite ... Congrats to all regardless as those are some fine specimens ! To quench my own curiousity .. How many years have Paul, Cheryl, Christy and Chad grown AG's ? Have they ever received an award, Plaque, Ribbon or other supersweet recognition in a weighoff for Giant Pumpkins? Like the Olympics, When do you truly lose your "Rookie" Status ? Good luck with this one Dave and congrats again to the rookies and veterans alike this year.

My daughter and I weighed our 671 J. Young(1308 Barenie x 1365 Singleton)up at Bengstons Pumpkin fest at Homer Glenn IL. this year for our first GPC event and had a blast via Shazzy and the group of dedicated growers here in Illinois. Our second year growing AG's so don't know if we'd qualify. The experience alone made us feel like winners. Meeting John Barenie was a Highlight. Thanks Again to all that supplied seeds and knowledge to her and I. Hate wishin my life away but C'mon Springtime, lol.
