I just noticed on the GPC results it has the results from the circleville pumpkin show. Those results are not that weighoff it is the sogpg weighoff. Is this a sign of things to come.

Thanks for the well wishes, myfingers are crossed. But as for the other it is held in circleville not the pumpkin show. Last year it was not listed as the chillicothe Lowes weighoff because that's where it was held.

I was at the show today. The weather was great and the fall color on the trees was amazing. The city of Circleville treated us like royalty. There was a TV crew there from RFDtv filming and a big crowd of onlookers to cheer us on. And I had the BEST fried bologna sandwich I have ever eaten in my life. Job well done! Good luck to all weighing tomorrow!

I have received several txts asking what today's weigh-off was.....the whole thing is just very confusing to 99% of the people. I think the Fairfield Co. Fair would be a good site for sogpg.

yes it was a nice weigh off today, why is it such a big deal that it was at circleville? I heard a couple people saying it shouldn't have been there.

You hear it at the weighoff? This is the gods honest truth, ever since a article ran in the circleville Herald about it I have gotten 13 calls from friends and family about it. None good

Today was not Circleville Pumpkin Show weighoff. That needs to be changed. Tomorrow Wednesday Oct. 17,2012 is the Circleville Pumpkin Show weigh off!

Josh - we all welcome another weigh off in cville just make it another date not in line with pshow. Pshow is a local event with a lot of history and local tradition. The queen contest, the art contest and all the others competitions have been local for over 100 years. There are other solutions for the sogpg weigh off date.

Short answer - that's what Tony put on the application for us. We can change the name, not a big deal on our end.

Circleville Pumpkin Show Weigh-off is on the 3rd Wed from 9am-noon. It kicks off the Pumpkin Show that runs from Wed thru Sat night. Today's weigh-off was NOT the Pumpkin Show weigh-off and the listing needs to be changed.

Just to clear one thing up the pumpkinshow was not always a local weigh-off only sence the early 70s not 100plus years But Is a Local and I agree for it to stay local it will take a couple years to get ironed out but we did take the sogpg pumpkins and put them in a building to keep seprate so the sponsors and the people can see the diffrence .

I could only assume that over 40 years ago in the early 70s they actually had to implement rules. Even at 40 years the tradition and heritage of the locals mean so much more than sanctioning bodies, seed sales, top 10 lists and records. There is a good solution.....open minds just have to prevail and make both weigh-offs successful!!!

Paul,
The RFD channel will be filming the local weigh-off as well. No one will be slighted.

Today's local weigh-off will go off as it always has. Ask one of our local growers who weighed there yesterday what he thought of it.....Dr. Bob. Ask Quinn Werner about his own experience. Several entrants are going to be at today's weigh-off so they can experience what you all have been discussing: The local flavor of the Pumpkin Show.
As always, the SOGPG committee will meet after the conclusion of the Pumpkin Show and discuss improvements for next year's weigh-off. I really hate to see such negativity about what was a most enjoyable experience

And to clarify, the results you saw were on the GPC info page. It was a GPC weigh-off.

I think the SOGPG did a excellent job! Very nice weigh-off, in a very nice town! The Folks at the SOGPG are very nice people and very welcoming to anybody.
The Circleville pumpkin show committee should be very pleased with the great weigh-off these guys hosted. as far as the numbers being low you can take just about any weigh-off move it's location and put it during the week during business hours. and you will see the amount of pumpkins being shown drop drastically.
I do agree calling it the Circleville pumpkin show was a bit confusing, I assumed the SOGPG weigh-off and Pumpkin show had combined, until doing a bit of research to find out otherwise. either way great event!
What would be really neat is if they did the weigh-offs side by side at the same time. locals verse the world. of course you would have to bring in a good announcer. I think Tim from the OVGPG would be the man for the job, he is a very good weigh-off announcer.

I'm sure you did enjoy it as the festival itself is one of the best. It's your last statement that worries a lot of local growers because the Wed weighoff was the main event kicking off a great week. Now its not even the opening act. Its just another weighoff

Since I started growing again I've been a active member of the circleville growers club since 1997 and have enjoyed every weighoff but now its "just another weighoff"..I am happy a beat my personal best today, it went way light but when you've grown these long enough you accept ups and downs as part of the game. I am glad I finished there on a high note as this was my last year weighing there.

Last year, it became apparent that a scheduling conflict was going to occur between the OVGPG and SOGPG weigh-offs and, after some careful thought by Tony Vanderpool, it was decided to align with a festival in order to attract contestants and grow the SOGPG as a club in order to forward the GPC's mission statement.
On Jan. 5, 2012, Dr. Bob Liggett and I, on behalf of the SOGPG, presented a proposal to the Pumpkin Show committee moving the SOGPG weigh-off to Circleville in order to attract world class pumpkins to Circleville and still maintain the local flavor of the Pumpkin Show. It was not an easy task, as Dr. Bob, me, and all other local growers did not want the local aspect to change and neither did the Pumpkin Show committee.
Ultimately, the Pumpkin Show committee loved our proposal and we agreed to meet again on July 15th to work out the logistics. At that meeting, the Pumpkin Show committee insisted on our weigh-off being located where it was in the city AND that it conclude by 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday when the official start of the Pumpkin Show begins with the early preview. Again, the Pumpkin Show committee was committed to keeping the festival a local one, as was the SOGPG committee.
All the while, the central focus of both parties was to make it a win-win for both the city of Circleville and the SOGPG. The SOGPG committee wanted a night weigh-off to accommodate those who work weekdays and can't get the time off, but the Pumpkin Show committee was adamant that the weigh-off conclude by 5:00 P.M.

Great idea Josh. We'll toss the idea around and present that to the Pumpkin Show committee. It will be difficult to accomplish, as the Pumpkin Show is pretty much set up after the local weigh-off on Wednesday, but I've yet to see anything of this scale that WAS easy to accomplish. This was an inaugural event for us all and we knew going in that there would be bugs to work out, but, all in all, I thought things went well. All weigh-offs boil down to organized chaos until a dedicated committee is in place to meet on a regular basis and make assignments and form sub committees.
One thing I HAVE learned is that the Pumpkin Show committee is a very difficult entity to navigate, but they have much to offer in the way of publicity and weigh-off logistical concerns. The Pumpkin Show is absolutely the greatest free show on earth and we, the SOGPG, want to contribute to that.
A hearty thanks goes out to Tim Tootle, Tony Vanderpool, Chris Vanderpool, Kevin and Tammy Sowers, Danny Reeb, and all our competitors. I am truly sorry if I've forgotten anyone. I had a great time.
As a final note, there is no secret agenda by either the SOGPG or the GPC to take over the Pumpkin Show or the local weigh-off.

Another successful Circleville Pumpkin Show weigh-off!! I'm not sure how it could have been any better!!
Joe / Tony - I really wish we could work TOGETHER as a CLUB to arrive at a good solution for the SOGPG weigh-off. I am there as before as a dedicated and active club member if the weigh-off is moved away from PShow.
Lets work together to come up with a solution and quit riding on The Circleville Pumpkin Show coattails!!!

Well, guess it time to put my 2 cents in. As many of you know, i was'nt happy with the move either. I did'nt want the 2 weighoffs to be confused as one. I did'nt think we would have the attendance. I just thought it was a bad idea. But i decided to give it a chance.
Well one fear came true, people confused the sogpg weigh off with the Pumpkin Show. I think this can be taken care off on are part and the GPC, with the wording when posted for weigh off dates. I think with time, the growers and the people that attend will realize that these are 2 different weigh offs.
Well, the day came, I loaded my melon and lg. When i got there, i was suprised. 5 pumpkins were already there along with melons, lgs and field pumpkins.I think they had 14 pumpkins show up, 10 watermelons, 4 lgs which is the most i've seen at the sogpg, maybe 10 field kins and even a mater. I know people said they did'nt have the kins they normally do. But with the year we had. I think this was about the avg for most weigh offs. They had 2 growers from out of state, and a few from ohio that drove 2 to 3 hrs to get there. So i was, yes, surprised.
The weather was beautiful and the location was great. We had great support from the members of the Pumpkin Show. Thank you for that. I think a good time was had by all. The growers from outside the circlville area were very impressed with the weigh off and the town of circleville. Many said they would come back. I think circleville would love that. A few even said they would like to stay and watch The Pumpkin Show weigh off next year.

So, with that said i would like to see the weigh off there again. I know many will say it will hurt the weigh off at the Pumpkin Show. I don't believe so.
I've lived in cville, Watt st and on Mound st. Pretty much right in the middle of the madness. The people in cville know when the Pumpkin Show weigh off is. The third wed in Oct. Been that way for as long as i can remember.
The people of Circlville and circlville growers will always support the show first.
A big thank you to the guy's from the sogpg. You all worked your tail off and did an awesome job!!
So, i hope we can all sit back. Take a deep breath and give this some thought. I would love to have the weigh off there again. Yes, somethings need tweeked, but i think it can work. Honestly, i never thought i'd say those words.
Thank you Danny Reeb

Never said it wasn't run or wouldn't be run well. But all can ignore it but a stake has been driven thru the Circleville group as a result of this that will never heal. People played nice yesterday but some of the same people I saw playing nice sought me out to tell me how pissed they were at the exact same people they were putting a nice face on for. You can deny or deflect it but I'm a realist I know it is there. some people changed their mind because the prize money was dropped to match that of circleville so we know if the prize money goes up those same people will again be upset. I saw attendance atCircleville meetings after the move and attendance at the summer picnic and it's obvious the lines were drawn ( for good or bad) they are there. Bottom line is it's just another weighoff now, when I pick my pumpkins up Sun morning that will be my last association with the Circleville club.

Huffspumpkins, I can see where you are coming from and respect your point of view on this subject. If I had been going to the pumpkin show weigh-off for many years, just have a great time year after year then all of a sudden one year they drop the bomb on it and change things around I would probably Be pretty pissed as well. It almost seems like everything that's good or atleast what we perceive as good to us gets screwed up or commercialized and it seems to take the fun right out of it for us as individules. But the new people that come to the same event that has been changed might think it is the greatest thing on earth when the old timers that have been around for a while think that it sucks now and had been on a down hill slide for a while. Note: this is not directed at the pumpkin show at all, it is just a general statement for anything in life that people perceive as a fun event.

Here's a point to think about. because I've done the most improved grower award the last couple of years I have a list I have compiled of everyones best for the last 12 years and you would be amazed at how many we have had come and go during that time. Average time for most is 3-4 years then they are gone. Only a very small handful that has been there for 12+ years ( 4 of which I know are dead set against it). Now are you there to appease the ones who come and go or the ones that when you call you know they are going to do what you ask without question. Since I've started this thread I have heard from more than a few growers who believe as I do but are not as vocal as I am and are afraid of being painted as trouble. I know I've ruffled feathers and I do believe Joe when he says there are no secret agendas but sometimes enthusiasm for something can blind you from what is right in front of you and by the time it is noticed it's too late.

And here's the part that will blow your mind, 4-5 years ago I wanted to bring the GPC to Circleville. I was the lone voice in favor of it, brought it up at meetings & tried to lay out a plan where the weighoffs would have different payouts, different recognition...basically whats happening now. My problem was my biggest roadblocks was Joe G. and Doc, they were making the same arguements I'm making now. After listening and thinking ( for over a year and a half) and letting my excitement settle I saw exactly what they were telling me. Now that's been forgotten & everything they were telling me then doesn't seem to register with them now? And that happened this year, this year it was deceided that the Tuesday weighoff would be the greatest thing ever...but why?..If they didn't move they would be going head to head with OVGPG weighoff. So do I think those who fought me then think differently now about what will happen?...no, they are intelligent men they know but this is a case where the needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many, and by many I mean all future Pumpkin show competitors in the years to come

We are trying to copy the weigh-off in Canada they had the same problems but are worked out I cant see any problem haveing a weighoff on Tuesday hurts Our local weigh-off at all we even store the vegies in a building far from our display so the people can see the diffrence The Pumpkin Show Committee will let us know if What they think and will decide if we did good of bad I hope it works. if not well we will leave it there I know one thing the pumpkin Show does not like Lobying one way or the other .
