I was out of competition so early I probably could win something for the best winter rye crop. Why can't I plow it under this fall instead of waiting for spring. It is a foot high and laying down. Hal

Winter rye will develop a long root system which will help stabilize the soil structure, and it will also help retain the minerals in your soil, and the rye will continue to grow and will accumulate minerals and nitrogen etc., thus enhancing the amount of good stuff in your 1 ft top soil layer after the rye is tilled or plowed under in spring.

I got my winter rye planted last weekend. I also mixed in two large bags of mychrorizae. The symbiotic relationship between the two should give me a jump start next spring.

It is what is happening below the ground that is important

You can till it in now or you can mow or weed wack it before the seed heads form.Next spring it will take off again(if mowed) and develop more biomass.
