In about a month the Seed Exchange section will be loaded with people giving away there seeds just for the cost of a self address stamped bubble envelope.

Don't know if you can go but if you want to contact local growers in your area there is a weighoff in Altoona this weekend about a hour or so from you.
Would be a good way to start.

The best stuff is free here. Seeds, advice, friends. And in my case a shoulder to cry on...lol

Yup the seed exchange area is where you want to be starting in about a month and check it as much as possible, I'll say this much about this hobby....."you get out what you put in"
(I'll have some seeds on there in November)
If you really want to grow one big (big to me is anything over 500lbs) you will need to put in the time to learn as well as to cater to the plants needs and if you start now you should be in good shape for next year.

Welcome

elamison, welcome to the hobby and to BP! I am about 80 miles from you and would be happy to help you get started. as mentioned in huffspumpkins post the altoona weigh off is this saturday. The weather isn't looking all that great but it would be a super opportunity to meet lots of growers and ask questions. [email protected]

amazing exchange of information awaits on this site. In what other sport/hobby can a newcomer get such quick feedback from a man with a world record to his credit???? (lcheckon, and his wife gerry has also been world record holder).

I was in your shoes last year at this time and I just read everything I could get my eyes on. Follow growers diaries and see how they do it. First thing to do is get a soil test done.

Great advice here! And elamison, find a support group close to you & ask each & every question you come up with...I promise, no one will laugh at you...well, maybe a chuckle or two!!! :) (I am only on year 2, but have learned so much from all these good people.) And even beginners who "friend" each other learn together. Fun stuff. Good luck!!!

Welcome to the madness!
Best bet is to connect with a local group or grower and go to thier patch. You can learn a ton by watching what they do.

Lots of great information and great people here willing to help too.
