It reads "Ron says that during peak growth, the pumpkins can grow 40 pounds per week.", and I agree...he´s probably talking about somewhen during the first two weeks after pollination, or the guy from the news thought the seed had been started in April 2011...but now I´ll continue to read, maybe I can find some kind of secret of this particular pumpkin.

I'll bet the guy heard 40 pounds per day and thought that Ron made a mistake so he put 40 a week in the article. If you don't see them grow day to day it's hard to believe they can put on that much weight in such a short time.
