and it is hard to believe the entry of

Can´t find the mega-heavy pumpkins on aggc to double-check the OTT and %heavy entries, but the others should make you look forward to a chance of smashing 1000 lbs with an OTT of 340 or something like that.

There should be an online course on taping properly. 87% and 98%, seriously? Maybe the two porch pumpkins I have measuring 240 and 180 actually weigh 700 or 800 lbs. Or maybe someone measured incorrectly. No disrespect intended, but it is not possible to go 87% or 98 % heavy according to recent OTT charts. Don't take my word for it. With the exception of a few oddities, it is exceedingly rare to find a pumpkin going more than 20% light or heavy.

With an ideal pumpkin (a sphere) an OTT of 340 inch would mean a sphere with a radius of 20.5 inch and with a volume of 36070 cubic inch. The entire volume being filled with water or anything else with similar density would mean a maximum weight of something like 1300 lbs, and the old OTT chart predicts 826 lbs for this pumpkin. Hence, it could go heavy up to 57% or 58% and then it is FULL, no more room left for even thicker walls.

Now I leave it to you to find out how many % heavy a cube-shaped pumpkin could go. Have fun!

...hint: it should be something like 72%. Yes, a cube could go much more heavy than a sphere, because the corners are additional volume which isn´t necessarily accounted for in the OTT measurement.
And now a square block which is only half as high as the lengths of its sides...

what a striking difference, and this makes me recall one of the posts by Pap in a thread some weeks or months ago when the correlation between pumpkin shape and light vs. heavy was discussed, and Pap pointed out that the flat to the ground pumpkins are more likely to go heavy. It must be true, according to maths.

A 327" (772 lb est) 1000 lber would be 30% over on the 2012 chart. That would be rare, but possible it seems. (See the 998 Frum - so close)

Our pumpkins went 24% heavy (898 lbs) and on chart last year, and the year before were 12% & 10% heavy...I understand that pumpkins 500-800 lbs tend to go heavy but the ones taping 1000 plus are usually more close to chart. within about 5% either way.

Sean, like you I'm hoping to still weigh heavy but will be just as happy if they weigh near the new charts which appear to me to be closer than ever.

Lol I still get a good chuckle out of that stat. That was a misprint ,it taped ott. 372" and when't 1 1/2 % over on the old chart. It would have been light, to the new chart. Sorry if it gave anyone palpatations Lol . Terry
