our weigh off isn't for two weeks. do I leave the kin on the vine or start next year's patch prep? its possible that it could be the heaviest so I don't want to lose much weight.

Even though the leaves are (in parts or completely) dead, the vine and root system probably isn´t, and therefore I think it could still push some juice towards the pumpkin for a couple of days (and I recall that I had read something like that a while ago on the message board). Thus, I would cover the pumpkin with blankets and leave it on the vine for the next one or two weeks (as long as you don´t have to expect damage by longer frost periods).

then leave it hooked up to the main and sides. some growth will still occur for up to a week after a heavy frost.roots-roots-roots.
cover the fruit at night to protect it.

When u cover them up make sure you put some traps out too for mice,Ive read Pap wrote about mice before i dint listen. had to find out the hard way.Butt the michigan Masher trap him last night.

thanks, yes I saw a mouse after I pulled the blankets one morning. put poison out saw they carried it up on top under the blankets hope it gets em all

We had a frost about 10 days ago that took out our unprotected plants. We had one pumpkin that put on 19 pounds in the last 6 days. It's not great growth, but every pound counts.
