a good practice while growing and training the plant.helps root development, anchors the plant on windy days and makes it harder for boaring insects to enter the plant. eventually by mid july though? you need to uncover the main so it can breath and also be available for frequent inspections. (most rotting problems occur first on the main. you need to be on top of any diseases or foaming areas before they take over the plant) pap

pap,how do you uncover the vines without damaging the roots?Do you just bury the vine at the node?

we bury everything early on except of course never the stump. we dig a shallow trench with a small handled shover ( i use a intrenching tool i bought at the army navy store )then bury vines with small sprinkling of mico/root shield/dry crumbles/then couple inches of soil over top.
natural rains and watering by the grower will slowly uncover many vine areas leading up to the time you want to uncover the main. the sides will gradually uncover themselves over the course of the season so we dont mess with uncovering them.
we just use our hand to uncover the soil off the top half of all main vines. thats enough to expose the main to air and visual checks.
you can grow mid to late season without a base but that main vine is the life line of your pumpkin.take could care of it.
