I cut the main vine on my 1161 it was about 60 to 65 feet long.another 10 feet would of been a complete circle. Is anybody else cutting there's or are they still growing?

We were told here to cut it if it gets longer than 25', so we do....cut it. Just using energy that could go to the pumpkin...ours is only 15' and the side vines buried in mulch/manure have supported well.

Cut mine just after a set pumpkin and let the sides behind that do all the work.

As a first time AG grower I learned in the info on the internet to cut the main at 25' but I see allot of big pumpkins are grown on 40' plus. Thinking about it...... It makes sense cause although some energey is going into making the plant grow there are extra trade offs 1.A plant that grows stays healthyer longer 2. More leaves and roots equal more energy to support extra growth and maybe some extra for the pumpkin 3. New leaves can take place of the old ones.

Not sure if I'm right, just some thoughts

My theory is as long as the plant is growing its putting out a more aggressive root system.Stop plant growth slow down the roots. But at some point the soil cools & the roots stop growing,so let the fruit get it all. Just theory! cant prove a thing.I was just wondering whos letting them grow after mid September??Anyone??
