It was a depressing day today as I chopped up my biggest pumpkin. it had black mold spots in a deep sagline. it was an estimated 800lbs (1404 bryson). when I cut into the sag line it was probably salvagable, if I had the time and effort to spare. That has been my problem all year. If I had had the time and effort, it would have had a chance at 1400. It was on track for that weight until the weeds took over. no vine burying, minimal watering, no sand under the pumpkins, and no weeding. I had 2 others rot out on me earlier (1488 marsh and 1419 bryson), so I culled the big one while it was still good for livestock feed. I saved the seeds (1404 X open). My next best is a solid 500+ estimated on 1495 Stelts. There is always next year!

sadly ben, these things require a lot of attention. next year possibly you could grow only a few and concentrate on them?best in the future.

Speaking for Ben. After planting I was asked and accepted to be a candidate for the house of representatives of Minnesota. I won the primary and now campaigning for the general election. Sometimes there are more important things in life than growing pumpkins.

What can make them rot suddenly like that? This year I've had a couple growing good then suddenly the just decided to rot. Could it be something in the soil? something I'm not doing?

Thanks

Up here in Maine, even "regular" pumpkin patches, giants, cukes & melons were rotting off of the vine....most said the unusally humid July and August were to blame....
