You have my sympathy Vic. I think we must be a bunch of masochists Anne. Mine hit 300" OTT today. With all the pumpkins going down around me, I am just keeping my fingers crossed. 26 more days until Allardt.

granddaughter's 285 OTT went down today...good luck on the 300~~!! Watch for a small pinhole in deep ridges...literally the size of a pinhead, but oh, so deep..I shall ever be a masochist, along with my granddaughter!!!

I was just kidding Anne. Very few people actually enjoy pain & I am certainly not one of them nor did I suspect you were. lol But many of us growers get hurt again and again from the disappointment of losing big fruit. Heartbreak is a common thing in this hobby. We must try to not get discouraged.

I would rather think of us all as "competitive" rather than masochistic, myself!!! It's a fascinating sport/hobby, that changes every 24 hours and challenges us all...fun, fun, fun! no offense whatsoever taken - have enjoyed this board for three years...all of you pro's have been more than patient with us newbies...and after 3 years, we still are! Good luck on yours!! Let us know....

Thanks for the nice reply Anne. I am something of a newbie myself. This is the first big pumpkin I have grown in about 40 years. The last one I grew was in my dad's garden in the early 70's. He bought some seeds at a hardware store and asked me if I wanted to grow one of them. I grow a 197 pound pumpkin that year and it was the largest one they had seen at the Tennessee Valley Fair here in Knoxville. I have been growing Carolina Cross melons for the last 4 years and decided to try a pumpkin this year as something of a afterthought. Now I think I am hooked. lol You are certainly right about changes and challenges and keeping busy. And most of all - the fun, fun ,fun. I am sorry about your granddaughter's 285 OTT going down. But it will be a life lesson and she will come back stronger from it. :o)

My 1789 went down early this year due to split in a deep ridge. I'm wondering how common this was on the 1789.
