Every one wants to leave there pumpkins on the vines for as long as possible, but for a first time pumpkin grower are there sure signs that you have to pick your pumpkin. Are there any bad things that can happen if left on the vine too long?

Great question Brosco. I have one that stopped growing 20 days ago and hope to get some feedback.

it all depends on the condition(health) of your plant and pumpkin. once it stops growing, if everything is good? they will last hooked up for a couple months.
id keep the fruit as cool as possible (sheet?).also, spray the pumpkin with a fungicide a couple times as well.

water eveningly and enough to keep the plant healthy and working/ if not and you get a big storm sometimes the fruit will try and grow to fast and blow out in a weak area.

we dont fertalize once the fruit gains stop.

Sorry I didn't give no where near enough info for you guys to help so here is what I'm dealing with:

My Pumpkin,Main vine and stem are all doing great but my stalks and leafs are dropping like crazy because being a first time pumpkin grower I let problems go (cucumber beetles and PM) until they are now out of control and my pumpkin is growing at a very slow pace. So I guess what I'm asking is will the pumpkin be fine if left on the vine with out leafs or is it best to make the cut if the plant has no more leafs. Rookie screw up

The bottom of New Jersey

Just cut the leaves off as they die (all the way at the base so the hollow part doesn't collect water) so they don't rot, and inspect the vines and stem of the fruit for rot on a regular basis and the fruit should be fine. You might even find that new growth will appear and keep your gains going for a while.
