Now I know that if seeds are put in optimal conditions they can last for hundreds of years but how long would you vets say a seed can last in normal conditions and still have the same genetic potential ???..........can they loose genetic potential ?

Any thoughts ?

From what I've read here, 10 years seems to be the cut-off point. Some seeds will be viable longer than that, some shorter.

Post this question on the AG Genetics and Breeding board for a better answer.
