What would happen if you plugged a split with a fresh cut plug from a safe part (shoulder)of the fruit. Would it fuse and grow out??What would the ruling be...DMG???or not. I have my 1248 at @ 900 lb with a blossom side split..very small.. not through or on the blossom itself...has anyone tried this??

I am not so sure you could take one piee if cut pumpkin and graft it to another and it would work...
We have have stem splits into the cavity heal themselves

Just for fun take one off of a another pumpkin and see. Or if you have some extra pumpkins growing around make your own 'split' and see what happens.

The big problem is the kin continues to grow after splitting.so your grafted plug will shrink as the kin pulls away from the plug.No time to heal & scab over.

If you can get a tooth pick or a sharp knife and kind of stick the lips of the spilt then you can get the pumpkin to weep a little. If that happends try and put a fan on it and it will thicken up. The real problem is how thick the blossem end is and I dont think there is anyway to conrol that :(

If the split goes into the cavities it's over. Always. Then it's just a matter of time. Like Handy says, the split is happening because of uneven growth, plugging it isn't going to stop the underlying problem. All that being said try it. Nothing to lose. What you need is like those tree grafting tools with two matching cutters, one for the fruit and one for plug. Two fresh clean surfaces would be the way to go. I wouldn't try it on your best fruit though.

1248 is probably done..split is pretty big..I'll let her keep growing till she stops...BUT..it is inevitable..

The "safe part plug" would soften and rot before the surrounding area. Hit it with garden dust/bleach mix to cauterize the area. Then seal it from air and water with some caulking.
Did it twice. Both times the fruit scabbed over when I removed the caulking. Don't think of the caulking as gluing the fruit together. more like you've gooped it on to protect the area from moisture, and air from getting into the fruit.

Klancy..I did what you said as soon as I saw the crack 12 days ago..you may be right..it is beginning to show sign of healing..It would be a miracle..but I'll leave her as long as there is no sign of rot..so far fruit is still growing and the split has reversed its direction and is getting smaller..Mark

Klancy, I'd be interested to know how big your split was that scabbed over? Was it into the cavity? Did you put the caulk all the way into the split or just kind of over the surface of the split? I have a split that is pretty signifigant all the way to the cavity that is about a week old so far I have emptied a full tube of silicone into it as it continues to expand. The Pumpkin is still growing in fact I got my best daily growth of the year yesterday. (Ironically I got the seed for this plant from Mark.)

1 split 2-3" long 1/4" wide, Think it happened overnight, didn't see it the night before. Could get a straw in to the core.
Squirted some Garden dust into the cavity. Applied the paste, Bleach, G.Dust, Captan & sevin dust. Let dry overnite. Piled silicone over the paste. Adjusted tent to keep dry, (After applying paste).
Made it to Goffstown NH #663 I think. Had it on truck 3 days to bring to event.
When I started lifting it off the truck, nasty juice started dripping out the bottom.
I moved my truck so quick, I almost took the tripod down. Could smell it in the truck for a couple weeks.
