Donkin, when you find out please let us all know. Stress in my line of work does make you thick skinned, however im not sure about pumpkin growing. When the plants are small I put a small fan on them to get them a bit stocky. Im not sure if it dors anything at all. I think its worth looking into.

I can see the logic behind it, I was told not to worry about heavy rain because it would make the plant stronger so it could have something there.

The article isn't available online anymore but there was a study done on pumpkin plants by a professor who simulated hail damage by firing ice at pumpkin plants in the early season, mid season and late season. According to the study, pumpkin plants that received early season hail before fruit set actually yielded higher average weight than plants that had no hail damage. I haven't tried taking a shot gun to my plant yet, but this research indicates that some early season stress can produce heavier pumpkins on average.

Giant Jack ( RIP ) had a theory about stress as I recall? Something about driving a tractor over vines. I miss Jack.

Jacks proposed method was actually to damage the main vine before the pumpkin...He took a lot of heat for that..I hope the have pumpkins on the otherside so I have something else to do than fish all the time

abby pappy knows stress?
stress is not having a job, the morgage is three months behind, no food in the house, your kids just got arrested for selling dope, your wife leaves you for the next door neighbor, or she comes home to find you in the rack with your pet sheep.
now thats stress----lol
pumpkin growing is supposed to be a fun thing. as soon as you take it to seriously? or set your goals to high? you opening the door for disapointment.
set you sights low and never be disapointed -lol
