Don't be suprised when the winning pumpkins start coming from other countries. When the GPC went world-wide they opened the race to one and all. Watermelon just happens to be the first.

With the Olympics just day's away this is a fitting start to the 2012 Northern Hemisphere weigh-off season!!!!! The season started with Eve Barton crushing the Southern Hemisphere record with her 1,589.5#er now a world record watermelon from Italy.
Kind of makes you think how BIG a fall season we could be gearing up for!?!?!?!?!

Hi everyone, we had the great opportunity to be there yesterday night and to share a lot of happyness with Gabriele and his family. Gabriele's previous record was kg.108 (lb 238); he has used his own seeds (open pollination) from 2011 and the plants have been grafted on "Lagenaria" pumpkin. The winning watermelon has about 75 days. He grows giant watermelons for more than 10 years. At the moment he has two more very good fruits still growing, which he might weight at the next GPC weight off in Sale Marasino. Gabriele (the blond guy in the photo with his cousin Sauro) doesn't speak english but he has asked us to thank everyone for all the congrats.

Stefano, We would like to congratulate Gabriele by sending a watermelon carrying tarp for the weight off in Sale Marasino (our old friends). Could you give us his postal address? He may well break his new world record! Great job from Italy! Lagenaria - was this the "Italian Edible" - Cucuzzi gourd?

Now I guess we will see if Guinness considers grafting to be a form of GMO and ultimately if this watermelon will be accepted. While it may not of been genetically modified in the lab on a molecular level. Two different set of genetics were used to produce something that will only reproduce in it's offspring one parent line. The category is called The Natural Plant World if I'm not mistaken. One plant from one seed. I'm just saying? IMHO.

Thank you Jesus...there is a future to grafting after all. Lagenaria rootstocks may be the way to go. Thanks Zuccabiodinamica for the updates.

I'm with Scott. I would definately disqualify the watermelon as, technically speaking, it wasn't grown on a watermelon plant (roots/stem), or even a species related to watermelons. The seeds from this watermelon will not be consistent with the plant growth exhibited this year.
It is like entering a race for Model T Fords with a Model T Ford body planted on top of a Ferrari.
Unfortunately Guinness will probably never find out, and as usual will accept the record without asking any questions. Guinness doesn't pay much attention to their own rules these days, and more and more incorrect entries are being made making it impossible for other growers, who follow the rules, to break them.

With this latest development, I have to also disagree with this method of growing. It is a big fruit, and a great job by Gabriele to grow it, but if Guinness does not allow this growing method and would not recognize it if they knew, then I too do not consider it to be the World Record. The 291 Kent is still the biggest watermelon grown from one seed on one plant, and still remains the World Record, in my own personal opinion.

So, are growers going to have to start taking pictures to prove that they are not grafting when entering contests and weighing watermelons?
How would anyone of known it was grafted if he were to to have said so. Do we know for sure that the 291 Kent was not a grafted plant and grown on a host plant? (Chris...I am sure it was not...just using the 291 as an example)
Cmon folks lighten up...it is still a massive 307.5 lb watermelon and worth of the pats on the back Gabriele is certainly getting now...perhaps he does not care about the record and was just playing around with grafting...
Next you will want to disqualify someone for grafting a greenie onto a pumpkin plant...and growing a WR...

I think its a great achievement to have grown the 1st melon over 300 lbs. My hats off to him ! The 291 was natural. I am trying a grafted plant this year, but without much sucess i'm sorry to say. If I'm not upset about the record being broken, no one else should be. Not much we do with these beasts ( pumpkin or melon) is natural anyway ;)

Hi, we have spoken to Gabriele on the phone tonight for some additional information about his watermelon. The OTT is 217,3". The watermelon is open pollinated. Concerning the grafting, we misunderstood: he has tried it with no good result; his watermelon has been grown on his own seed from 2011. Stefano and Benedetta

Wow! Really? Misunderstood? And I quote "Hi everyone, we had the great opportunity to be there yesterday night and to share a lot of happyness with Gabriele and his family" Radda do you not speak Italian? How was something as important as that misunderstood? Just asking?
