There's been good discussion regarding main vine past the pumpkin vs terminating main at the pumpkin but I also wondered what most folks do about secondaries on the main vine past the pumpkin?
paps...do you continue with secondaries off main vine past the pumpkin...or do you grow only the main vine out past the chosen fruit?
Thanks/Glenn

if you have area to fill in I let the secondary's go. But I try not to let to many vines go at the same time as they may take a little away from the fruit. personally main plus 6 sides is all i'm comfortable with. my 2 pesos

Good question Glenster,Im not sure the best way to do it, but I TRY to leave 5 or 6 secondaries on the main vine past the pumpkin, or atleast try to, most of time once my pumpkin gets going after 20 to 30 days the vines growth slow down to almost a complete stop on growing.

we allow secondaries to grow off the main past the pumpkin to fill the plants allocation area asap.(800-850 sq ft) once its full we just let the main grow in and around as space permits and pinch off the secondaries. once we get into sept? we uaually kill the end of the main as well.
ps----in the past we tried terminating the main at the fruit and found that even though earlier pumpkin growth was excellent? that to grow better throughout the season? you needed tha main and side growth past the fruit. just our opinion.
sometimes you dont have any choice and may need to terminate at the pumpkin.in that case you do what ya gotta do to keep that pumpkin healthy and growing.

earlier pumpkin growth with vines termed could be a good thing in an area where the the weather could turn cool and ugly overnight?.Depending on the climate where you live..timing is everything!!

we have been experiencing above average temps with very little rainfall here since the first of may and i will put my money on an early fall this year.Sept weather will suck here this year..mark my words.
