Cure = plant removal
(no host = no problem)
Not the answer I am sure you were looking for but this is a bacterial disease so fungicides (that work on fungus) do little good. It is vectored by squash (stink) bugs so control of them can lessen your odds but this is not a cure. A copper based bactericide is your best option, however by time you see it the odds are it is already replicating at a high rate and it is to late, so that is why I recommend plant removal.

Wiz, when i had it my pumpkins just tapered real quick in growth over 3-4 days and then stopped. Vine tips turn yellowish and stop growing, looking stunted and new leaves stay stunted and then the yellow haze color carries backwards in the plant turning all leaves the ugly yellow...you can check out my dairy from last year. I lost all plants and a good kin on the 1725 harp.

Back when I used to get it, this was usually the first symptom I would see on the vine tips:

Matt D. is this similar to fire blight on apple trees? With fire blight we've had to remove all affected branches and careful burn them because bees, other insects and birds could transfer the infection. So, if he removes the plant is it recommended that he try and burn the plant (or something else like bag it) to keep it from spreading to other plants?

Its cost me many plants in the last 5 years.Now that I know the cause(thanks folks a BP.com) Ive been able to keep everything healthy with a aggressive spray program.I just ordered stink bug traps and will report in on their effectiveness.Once you see it the plant has had it.

In my opinion Fire Blight (disease of pome fruit trees) and Yellow Vine disease (effects cucurbits) are only similar in that they are both caused by bacteria. There are no cankers, or “ooze” with yellow vine that is typically associate with Fire Blight. Also, Fire Blight is influenced by weather and infects flower clusters both of which are not relatable to Yellow Vine.
My suggestion to remove the plant is to limit the potential spreading and cross contamination of other plants. This can mean that the sick pumpkin plant is removed, and buried, or bagged and thrown away, or some other method. The important fact is you want to limit the insect exposure from feeding and re-infecting your plants. In most cases pulling the plants and having them wilt down in a distant “plant trash” pile should work out just fine.

I had limited success last year using a Julian Smith designed homemade trap. I like the thought of a lure. I hope someone will give an update on Rescue Trap results.

You know you've got it for sure when the pumpkin plant's just stops growing, all the fruits abort. I have been growing pumpkins for a while now and this problem beats em all. There is just no salvaging anything with it.

I just pulled my 1566 Rodonis it too had YVD, for some reason I've only seen squash bugs on this plant and I spray everything the same day. They are hard to kill I have found out!

I have had my traps out for since early May, I have seen some stink bugs here and there. None in traps. I have changed out initial 2 week lure and put in 7 week replacements, I might have to lower them closer to ground. I am up on my Bayer tree & shrub and Talstar applications, so maybe they are all dead!!

I am thinking to kill these things you need to hit them with a good contact spray. The merit seems to work better on the cuke beetles than the squash bugs. Anyone else notice that?
