We all know what the best approx pollination date is but what about a fully terminated plant?? How far out with the secondaries before terminating?Should i be concerned about kin growth at day 10 or day 20 while i am still trying to grow a plant.I can't see a 1700lb pumpkin poll at 12-14ft grown on 800sqft plant having huge 10-20day numbers.?????

same here, my pumpkins are doing good but plants are only half way filled in so I'm not fretting the early numbers.

Question is..can we gain back those pounds we lost in the last 10-20day's while keeping our plants on the move? .Will the weather in sept make or break us?Inches are weight Huff.

Here is my take on that. A terminated ( smaler) plant will grow fast out of the gate but a much larger plant with the ability to backfeed the pumpkin will grow longer due to more younger, healthier leaves.
But our weather is different. I know I will have growing weather into Oct.

Here's my take on that. Small plant all terminated will grow fast out the gate but that plant will age quickly. Larger plant with much more to backfeed will keep the pounds coming where a smaller might not have. My weather is different than yours though. I know I'll have growing weather well into Oct.

I should have specified.I can't see a 1700lb pumpkin poll at 12-14ft @800sqft with big 10-20day ## grown organically.

by backfeed I mean plant past the pumpkin feeding it. Feeding back to the pumpkin. I should have been more clear. I have my own speech...punkinesse

Thanks Huff:) but i do think this is a very good question and i would love to hear more input..not just for myself but for everyone who loves this site and works very hard to become a better grower. If we can't get input here ..it's pretty much a done deal.

It's early yet, but between Carl's greenhouses and John's determination to get his record back, October should be fun. Carl, a recon to Inverness County may be in order.

Donkin, i think the last 20 days growing are more important than the first 20, 5 lbs a day at the end is better than 3lbs a day in the begining. i like a bigger plant at the end of the season. to help feed the plant. keep posting i dont think anything bad was ment, just a poke in fun

However Iceman is one smart cookie ;)

As you know I like a larger plant and our 10 and 20 day measurements here have rarely been to the chart. Have a cold one and best of luck DONKIN . Oh and I think all on BP enjoy your diary posts even the digs.

Theres been some talk by plant experts to not terminate everything for as long as possible. The vine tips hormonally signal the plant to keep going.Of course, if you grow a world record with a plant thats was terminated early ,them most of us will try that next year.

What time frame do most growers call early? Middle of july? end of july? middle of aug?In an area with a very warm climate i can't see it taking very long to fill in 800sqft and there have been massive pumpkins grown on much less.

There is only one place green mold is growing John and if you don't start using it you may loose it AHAAA

it makes some sence that if the main and several sets of sides are left to grow (after the pumpkin) and as long as that section of main and sides are growing ? that they will be calling for juice from the rest of the plant.
and guess what pumpkineers? that juice has gotta pass by the pumpkin and it stem on the way down to the growing vines.
just my thoughts. who the hell knows anyway? just gimmie a cold one outta that pail over there ---lol

this is where Joze....joe ailts should chime in. anyone remember that vine tip growing out of the greenhouse on Dales 1723 last year? theory goes that the plant will be fooled into a longevity mode as opposed to i am done and lets mature the babies we have to seed stage. it is a hormonal thing the the plant continues to produce if there are growing tips still wating to grow. like a strawberry plant sending out runners. these plants tap in and clone themselves in nature...thats how they beat the borer. again just my take from jozeand my own poking around.

with that in mind i do not have the luxury to do so with space. i have never ran a main back along itself like i have heard of. i usually have continual pop up terts to contend with all season so maybe those will provide the same hormones. joze?
