most row cover has a light transmission percentage listed on it.
We use 70% light transimission stuff (30% shade) to shade our main growing tip, and early on this year when plants were young and seriously sunburning, my wife set up a much parger piece to shad the entire plant for a few days and it most likely saved the season.

It works for me, I use Agribon 19 which is 85% light transmission. I have my patch covered all year to keep insects off and the row cover doubles pretty well as shade protection, not perfect mind you, but I can still get away without using anything additional. Your results may vary.

I used old white bed sheets that i used to cover my pumpkins with this year. Worked pretty good, just throw the sheets over your younger leaves and walk away. There isnt much weight laying on the leaves so no worries there breaking anything. 100 degree heat with not a cloud in the sky will do some real damage to newer leafs I found out this year.
