I planted two pumpkin plants in my patch this year and am running out of space. Both plants were pollinated this past week and they both have leaves covering abut 100 sqft. I have about 800 sqft in total so I don't know if I should pull one of the plants. What is the smallest sqft that it is possible to grow a 1,000 pounder, 1,400 pounder or higher?

It really depends on your soil and how healthy you can keep the vines. A smaller plant will have to make the older leaves last longer unless you use some tricky vine turning to replace older leaves with newer growth. Also the leaves and root mass is what feeds the pumpkin -- to a point a bigger plant can produce a bigger pumpkin.

I like google searching using normal search words and "site:bigpumpkins.com" like this better than using the built in site search -- it gives me more specific results for what I am looking for, you could add the word message or diary if you want only results from message boards or diaries.

I grew my 1079 in a little under 400 sq feet last year
and my 835 was under 200 sq feet. Check 2011 diary jeffp listed somewhere around late october

If you have a healthy plant you can terminate the secondaries and main and it will support the pumpkin. If you lose original leaves let a tertiary grow into the deficient area.

I agree with the above posts based on my(and friends) growing the past 4 years.

You can possibly grow a 1000+ pound pumpkin in the space you have, but you will have to weed, spray, etc. more to achieve the weight.

Chris Stevens grew his 1810 2 years ago on 682 square feet.

Plenty of room for both, Longmont Pete consistantly grows 1,000 pounders on less than 300 square feet. He grew his 1306 on just over 300 square feet in 2010.
