Wondering if there is a reason to think that the 1st set on the main is better than the later sets ? ie plant physiology, nutrient flow etc.---not considering shape or position on the main

I culled the 1st set this morning on my 1426 as I decided I like the position and the pollinator of the 2nd set better. Rates of growth were the same. the 1st set was 4 days older so its not as if there was already a sink on the plant. thanks jeff

More often than not my first pollinations abort. Generally I go with the second.

In the 'How to grow giant pumpkins' book Drew Papez said he finds the second pumpkin grows better. Of course Dave Stelts said in one of the books that he pollinates just one pumpkin. Best to pollinate two or three and pick the best grower. Any way that's what I do.

It could just be me, but when I have pollinated the first pumpkin all the others have aborted on me.
