Figured I'd ask this on here..(With this bein me 2nd yr growin AG's I'm Lookin for experience)What do you all think is too far out on the main vine to set a Pumpkin? I know we have a certain amount of time to get a set on per the growing season time frame but I have a pumpkin I pollinated this mornin at 20 ft out and was wondering if thats too far? Hammer away at me..................NOW..lol Also posted this on Premium members Message Board

It's not ideal, but I grew my 1165 Marsh at about 25 feet last year. It's all I could get. This was pollinated late July, and the plant was in shade and just 200 square feet. It still got to be around 400 pounds and a nice orange. Are you talking about as opposed to growing on a closer side vine or just pulling the plant? Don't pull it. You can grow big on side vines too.

I'd try to set one closer in if I was you-ha ha.The sweet spot on plants is 12-16ft (my opinion). Having said that we'll never know if 20 ft is good unless a bunch of people grow some out there. Come to think of it wasnt the world record grown near 20 ft out

If your climate is great and you have time to grow out a large plant before poll thats awesome.I think timing is a big part of it.

Donk, I agree with you I shoot for 12-15, I'm just letting someone know they didn't screw up by going 20'. A lot of examples both ways.

Donk, he might not have the option of pollinating in the ideal range which I took it as why he posted the question. I didn't which is why I was forced to go with the 25 footer on one of my plants last year.

I know Jeff Ried loves to get out around the 20ft mark before poll and he holds the Nova Scotia record.

If 85 % of the people grow at 12-15 ft, 85% of the successes will be at that range. Since you really cant make it make a pumpkin at a shorter distance, I'd go for it. I mean you spent a lot of time getting the plant that big, see what she's got under the hood. Not like you would bye a car and quit driving to because it ran out of gas once.

Nothing wrong with a pumpkin at 20 feet for this time of the season. Think of all of the plant behind the pumpkin. I grew what became my personal best up to 2008 on a flower twenty feet out at 1108 pounds.

1622 Young 2009 grew at 23 ft. You can still grow a big one.

Luke, Its called inexperience on my part that I pinched back all the females, Hell this thing was puttin females on before I got the 8 ft cold frame off of it back in april.... Whats crazy is the plant doesn't have huge leaves but lots of em. I'm measuring this afternoon at 38 ft across the back on the secondaries. Don't know if thats good or bad lol.
