I was at a small park today, there was a lawn company applying fertilizer to a fully dormant lawn, it has barely rained a half inch in three weeks. There were several small ponds in the park covered in algae. The lawn company the city hired is doing a terrible job. They must fertilize the lawn every two weeks just so it looks like they are doing something special. They city will probably have to hire another worker to spray copper in the ponds to get rid of the green goo, instead of just fertilizing the lawn once in the spring and once in the fall.

Nic I have a neighbor who uses a lawn service. During a 26 day stretch with no rain and high heat they did 2 applications because it was on the schedule. His lawn now looks like crap but they told him they can do "extra" service to make it better...lol

some people just dont understand how harmfull these lawn chemical are. some dont care either. lawns or gardens for that matter that are dependant on chemical fertalizers will quicky erode once the applications are taken away. --- kinda like a drug adict with no drugs available.

Some people are just idiots and will never change. There is a company here that landscapes the local hotel and puts mulch around the tress about 2 feet thick right up to the trunk of the tree. Oh yea, these idiots are everywhere. NP if youre paying taxes for that park, I would call, you might get lucky and get a smart person, they are everywhere also.

Nic I'm guessing that the lawn company the city hired had the lowest tender, you get what you pay for. Don't get me started on my outfit. We must purchase items where a standing offer has been accepted regardless of quality or price.

Because of practices like this and little to no common sense out there, it won't be long before a bag a fertilizer will need to be purchased with a license, this type of legislation is already in the works. Scare the public and pressure uneducated politicians and you can pass just about any law you want.

I emailed the city about it, doubt they will do anything though most landscaping companies are doing the same thing. I bet the lawn company is making a fortune destroying the lawns throughout the city. I would think the company would understand that eventually they would make more money if they did a better job and knocked out the competition. Scamming people to make a quick buck will not be a good practice long term. I should start a landscaping company that does things right. lol

I have my lawn treated with chemical fertilizers and have been doing this for 2 years. My lawn looked bad before doing these applications. With weeds growing every where and certain types of mosses. I see a big difference in the green color of my lawn. I now have to cut the grass 2 times a week to keep up...I guess I got caught up in all of it to.

I only use a lawn weed killer sporadically....then its organic Richlawn...CHICKEN...once a month or so....humic acid granular....and even a dose of seaweed too when I have the time....give it a shot...you'll be amaZed how many organic remedieZ are out there for your lawn too....

Lawns are highly over-rated. I'm working on more garden/patch as soon as my new home is finished, and my present patch is repaired from construction-related damage.
As organically as possible, of course.
Shouldn't take more than 5 years, many thousands of dollars, and not retiring until age 85.

Kenny, a mowed weed is just as purdy as green grass. Besides, me and you both should be in the woods trying to get abducted by aliens.

Quantum Ken- I work at a 9 hole golf course that uses only organic fertilizers because of its proximity to many sensitive aquatic areas, and the turf is the highest quality I've had the pleasure of playing the great game on. We have had many greenskeepers from some of the top golf courses in the state visit our links to observe and learn about our fert routine. Chemical ferts are vastly overrated IMHO- if AGs that can grow a single plant over 1500 sq/ft, with fruit growing 50+ lbs a day& nearly a ton in 100 days of growth, can thrive with organics why on earth would grass not also benefit from the same.

I actually got a response, they were spraying weed killer and slow release fertilizer. They said they have had problems with other companies before so now they make sure they have someone there to oversee. Sound credible. Just happened to look bad the way I saw it.

Check out the "Organic Lawn Care Manual" by Paul Tukey. His company is Safe Lawns (you can google it). He also has a film out called "A Chemical Reaction." It is quite an eye-opening documentary relating to lawns and the chemicals that we apply.
