I am fortunate enough to know someone who went from Normandy to Berlin. He is 96 years old and is still mentally alert, but his body is starting to fail.

If you know someone who was there 68 years ago, tell them "Thank you." Their days are numbered, and you will make their day with your thanks.

God bless them all, who were there on that terrible day.

Thanks Steve for the reminder...understanding what went on there that day makes me understand how fortunate we all are. My hat's off to all those great folks. Thank you all.

Great post.
My dad was in D-Day. He made it. Then really suffered through the winter Battle of the bulge. He was then assigned to Gen. George Pattion.
They were the greatest generation.

PS- He was a tank mechanic. He almost drowned going ashore on D-day. he not only had his battle pack...but tools too.

Bill, that is an amazing thought... the bravery that that required. I can imagine that those wrenches and whatnot for working on tanks were pretty heavy. Yet it was his duty to keep them and get them to shore. Thanks for that post and thanks to all who serve.

A story I am proud of, my grandfather who was a Canadian but of German decent lied about his age and joined the army. He was captured in Dieppe France in 1939. Hi parents were notified that he was killed but he remained in a prison camp for 3 years. He passed way too young @ 63 but would be 90 next month. A very quiet and gentle man. We miss him.

Great stories...that generation has/had a great influence on the person that I am. I am red, white and blue through and through, and thankful to the end. I feel so fortunate to see a WWII vet out and about anymore. The last time was at Walmart, a nice old fellow with his beautiful wife. With his veterans hat he was easy to spot. I wanted to stop them and take a picture them with and my baby girl. Just so one day she remember meeting one of the folks who saved this fine country and allowed for the great lives that we now live. With all due respect I bridled my desires and just left them alone after a pleasant glance and a nod of my cap.

Thanks, folks. I was brought up in the fifties to honor our vets, living and dead. My parents frequently pointed out WWII vets that they knew, and were proud to know them.

Hopefully, Vietnam-era vets will someday get the credit due them.
